Mini Invasion Rebuffed by Massive Security
After having squatted men's public bathhouses, country fairs, private parties, old fables and also biennials, Katarzyna Kozyra decided to squat the Frieze Art Fair, at Regent's Park, in London, from 11th to 15th of October, 2006. With this new event of the cycle In Art Dreams Come True, where the Polish artist tries to realize those impossible dreams such as singing as an opera diva, appearing as a fairy-tale princess or as a femme fatale, this time Kozyra has decided to attack her most challenging dream to-date: to squat an exclusive art fair.
If artistic institutions are weak and by now used to being attacked by artists, including even squatting and hacking interventions within their systems, isn't this the same for the market system, which instead is generally taken very seriously. And so when she tried to enter the fair with her small personal gallery, nomad and also portable, constituted by five midgets with placards and mini-projection screens attached to their backs, they received short shrift - no pun intended - from the organisers, with none other than fair director Matthew Slotover banishing them from the tent.
What does The Midget Gallery sell? Nothing, really. Or rather everything, in seeing that it sells the artist herself, represented in a performance. In the age where the aesthetic value and economic value are equivalent, what counts is to be present in the great kermesse of the market. If your worth it; if not, no.
Where can you find The Midget Gallery? Probably in next art fair, or maybe in a faire tale: that one you will find at DAAD Gallery in Berlin, since 17th of November, 2006, where Katarzyna Kozyra will let us know all the story about the ugly duckling artist trying to become a real diva.
How can you contact The Midget Gallery? By calling the phone numbers found on the business cards that each of the five midgets tried to distribute during the fair. Hoping that when you call, a midget won't respond in Polish. Otherwise you can always consult the website www.themidgetgallery.com where you will be able to find all of Katarzyna Kozyra's works at discounted prices. Yes, each and every work from the last few years, but in the form of a postcard. If you decide to purchase them, they will arrive at your home from the various places where the performances took place, with a special dedication just for you.
Many greetings from Katarzyna who will obviously add this Frieze Art Fair performance to the postcards already produced.
